Marvin Durden, Jr., 80, of Beaumont, TX passed away on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Marvin graduated from Hebert High School in 1952. Also in 1952 he was on Texas Southern University's national championship football team where he played defensive tackle. He proudly served in the U.S. Army 1956-1958 as a Pvt.
In 1959 he began his career at South Park ISD as an Educator moving through the ranks as a Teacher, Coach and then becoming a Principal for over 31 years. He retired in 1990. He matriculated from Texas Southern University in 1956 with B.A. in Education, Prairie View A & M University in 1971 with M. Ed and Lamar University in 1973 with a certification degree.
Marvin has worked and served his community in many ways. He was currently serving as Vice Chairman of the Trustee Board of Greater Good Hope Baptist Church, Secretary of the Board of Directors at Education First Federal Credit Union, member of the Appomattox Social Club, and member of Dorie E. Miller Post 817 American Legion.
Marvin's greatest joy was his family and he leaves loving memories to his children, Thomas Grant Durden, Brian Durden, Marvin Durden, III, and Marva L. Durden; sisters, Linda Durden Brown, Delores Durden Allen and Mildred Durden Rhodes; a special friend, Rose Williams; grandchildren, Marisa Ross, Empris Durden and Carlos Durden; a loving host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ira Ann Durden; parents, Rev. Marvin, Sr. and Thelma Durden, and brother, Mark "Bobby" Durden, Sr.
There will be a wake on Friday, November 21, 2014 at Comeaux Community Funeral Chapel (624 Irma St) 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. The Celebration of Life service for Marvin will be on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Greater Good Hope Baptist Church (2725 W. Virginia St). Visitation will be 9 a.m. until his home going service at 11 a.m. Marvin will begin his eternal rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors under the professional care and direction of Comeaux Community Funeral Chapel.

Deepest condolences to Mr. Durden's Family. He was my 3rd grade teacher at Southerland Elementary. I can still recall how much love and pride he had for his family. Such high standards....sadly they don't make them like this anymore. R.I.P. Sweet dreams,my dear teacher.
