Mary B. Ball JAMES ISLAND - Mary Theresa Britton Ball, formerly of James Island, passed away Monday, December 13, 2010. She had been residing with her daughter and family in Orangeburg for the past five years. Mrs. Ball was born in Charleston on Tuesday, September 2, 1941, a daughter of Andrew Joseph Britton Jr. and Mary Theresa McCarrel Britton. She taught in Charleston County for more than 34 years. Starting her career at Stahl High School, she moved to Harborview Middle School, which later became Fort Johnson Middle School. She later was inducted into the Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher's Sorority. She often had the honor of teaching the child or even grandchild of a former student. She is survived by her daughter, Mary B. Watford (Jeffrey); two brothers, Laurent W. Britton (Marsha) and Eric P. Britton (Jo); a sister-in-law, Brenda Britton; four grandchildren, Alex Watford, Mary Frances Watford, Patrick Watford and Sarah Watford; a nephew, Laurent W. Britton II (Tina) and two nieces, Marie B. Rodriguez (Edgar) and Lisa B. Breeze (Scott). Mrs. Ball was predeceased by a brother, Andrew J. Britton III. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M Thursday evening at the James A. McAlister Funeral Home 1620 Savannah Hwy. Dear Muffy and family- Bob and I were so shocked and saddened to hear you lost Mary. While we lost touch over the past years, we stayed 'in touch' through Carol & Bill and know what a close friendship your families have. There are no words to ease the pain, but please know you are in our prayers
during this most difficult time for you. Sincerely,
Bob and Carol Linville

I am so sorry to hear about Mary's death. We went to school together and that was a long time ago! We have kept up with each other over the years sharing our child's stories and their journey through life. We both were so proud of our one offspring and all the good things ,and some not-so-good too. Then when the grands arrived we were so happy! We have kept up with each other even though I moved out of state to be closer to my grands.
I will keep Mary and her family in my prayers and...

What a great teacher and wonderful person Mary was. Many years ago Mary was our son's 8th grade teacher. He had gone to summer school to repeat sixth grade math. She saw us in a restruant one evening and told us she didn't understand why that had happened, because he was such a good student. Because she took a special interest in him and made him realize how capable he was, he not only did well in her class, he won the math award that year. Mary was a caring person who always had the...

I enjoyed Mrs. Ball as my teacher at Harbor View Middle School 1970-1971. She was strict but always kind and I will remember her fondly as one of my favorite teachers. I used to see her from time to time on James Island and she always stopped to speak with me. I am so sorry for your loss as I know that she will be terribly missed.
