A very special lady and a special friend. I shall miss her.

I am Aunt Evie's oldest niece, the daughter of her sister, Florence. I remember the first time we visited her in VA, and she took my brother and me to a Marine Band Concert. She wore her uniform and as we walked in all the young Marines saluted her. We felt that we were with a real celebrity! My condolences to Evie's family. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet her and work with her briefly at the Smithsonian.

I came to know Evie, my Aunt-in-law shortly after I married her nephew Ron back in 1979. I liked her instantly! She had an eccentric but endearing personality. I admired her military background as a female leader during times that saw very little of that! I often found myself bragging to friends or coworkers that “my husband’s aunt was a Colonel in the Marines, and first female to have charge of male troops!” No wonder she developed such a strong nature! I worked with Evie as a fellow Smithsonian volunteer for many years and kept in touch with her after I left the area. When I last spoke to her in the fall, she regretted having to retire from her volunteer duties. I feel sure the SI is not the same without her. My condolences to her family.

I had worked with Evie for several years when she volunteered at the Smithsonian's VIARC answering public inquires; she would call me at NMAH for questions related to our objects. It was always a pleasure and we frequently had a laugh about some of the more unusual questions she would get. Very sad news. I worked with her for a few years at the Smithsonian. She was a force to be reckoned with. She will be missed.
