I worked part time at Pollman's Bakery on Broad Street from 1959 through 1962 (Bishop Toolen High School Days) and felt as close to Mrs. Mary Pollman Bender and her husband as I did my own mother and father. She was a wonderful, loving mentor and counselor to me and I spent many days and overnights in their “Girls Guest Bedroom.” When I graduated in 1962 they planned a Graduation Party for me at their home (with my three closest friends and our “dates”) enjoying tender steaks, Mr. Bender...

My mother, Marie Pownall, worked in the decorating room along side Mrs. Bender for many years. In addition, my aunt Maggie McKenzie, who was known affectionately as "Miss Mac," decorated cakes too. They turned out some of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen to this day. The thing about Pollman's cakes is that they not only were beautiful, they tasted like heaven! My mother held Mrs. Mary Pollman, Mr. Penny, and the entire Pollman family in high esteem. They were wonderful folks to...

I am so sorry to hear of Mary Pollman Bender's death. My condolences to the family members. I worked at Pollman's Bakery in my teen years, and knew them then. She is the end of a wonderful legacy in Mobile!
