Obituary
Mary Ann Brooks, 87, of Mableton, GA peacefully went home to the Lord at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, GA on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. She was born in Leonardtown, MD to the late William Hayden and Leona Smallwood. Mary Ann was educated in the St. Mary's County school system. Mary Ann developed a strong work ethic at an early age. She worked as a laundress at the Leonardtown Laundry for 24 years, a sales representative at Ben Franklin Store's craft department for 27 years, and she provided hospitality services at the Hampton Inn in Lexington Park for 8 years.
Mary Ann married Charles Aloysius Brooks on July 11, 1953 and raised their four children in Leonardtown. She was well-loved and respected by all those who met her, and she never met a stranger. Her sense of family extended well beyond the walls of her home. She made an impact on so many people's lives with her infectious smile and her love of laughter. She could warm your heart with just one word, "BABY". Mary Ann enjoyed cooking to include her specialties; Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham and potato salad. She enjoyed singing in a local band in St. Mary's County as a young adult. She had a passion for working with her hands. Her other hobbies included crocheting, floral arranging, cross-stitching, quilting, and ceramics. She also treasured time spent playing cards with family and friends.
Mary Ann had a warm spirit and a devout faith in the Lord. She was a faithful Catholic who believed in the power of prayer. She worshipped at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Leonardtown, MD. Upon moving to Georgia, she worshipped at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church in Atlanta.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Brooks; son, Aaron Brooks; son-in-law, Larry Dyson; parents: William Hayden and Leona Smallwood; brother, George Smallwood (Margaret); brothers and sisters-in-law: Thomas "Tommy" Shade, Jr., James Brooks (Martha), Robert "Knute" Brooks (Genevieve), William "Dickie" Brooks (Bernice), Francis "Coy" Brooks (Helen) and Thomas "Tommy" Brooks.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Beverly Brooks of Mableton, GA; David "Troy" Hayden (Gloria) of California, MD; Deborah "Peaches" Dyson of Mableton, GA; grandchildren: Carlos Brooks (Vicky) of Great Mills, MD; George Brooks (Jurea) of Charlotte, NC; Terence Brooks of California, MD; great grandchildren: Shemar Brooks, Parren Barnes, Kareem Gough, Akari Brooks, Ta'Kiyah Brooks and
Maxwell Brooks; siblings: Charles Smallwood (Nancy) of Huntingtown, MD; Gloria Shade of Upper Marlboro, MD; uncle: George Smallwood of Washington, DC; sister-in-law: Ada Brooks of Chester, VA; godchildren: Mary Young, Karen Hayden, Angela Collick, Dwayne Young, Carla Adams, and Brittany Greer.
Mary Ann entrusts a legacy of love and faith to her nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends to include Joseph Scott, Delores Thompson, Jackie Thompson, Harry Mason, Sabrina Stewart, and Ruth Yates. She asks all to keep in memory and prayer, the deceased Joseph and Nancy Smallwood, Mary Catherine Kane, Karen Scott, and Catherine Mason.
