Mary Burkhardt

1937 - 2026

Mary Donna Hale Burkhardt, a dedicated educator and beloved pillar of her community, passed away at the age of 88. Born on March 2, 1937, in Shelbyville, Indiana, to Walter and Edith Hale, Mary lived a life defined by service, faith, and family.



A passionate teacher for over 30 years, Mary touched countless lives through her instruction in Physical Education, Math, and Science. Her commitment to others extended well beyond the classroom; she was a devoted member of her church, where she frequently hosted gatherings, volunteered at the Church Thrift Shop, and supported the Food Pantry.



Mary was known for her hospitality and her love of entertaining. Whether she was cooking for friends or organizing a church event, her home and heart were always open. She was a lifelong animal lover, cherished by her many dogs, and an avid collector of teddy bears and butterfly pins.



She is survived by her husband, Donald Burkhardt; her children, Mary, Diane, Stan, and Don; her eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, including her identical twin sister, Martha.

Note: In honor of Mary's love for her church, donations to the Parrish United Methodist Church Food Pantry are welcomed in lieu of flowers. We are asking those who plan to attend to wear blue, Mary's favorite color, instead of black.
