Dr. Mary Frances Welsh Byrd

Dr. Mary Byrd and I shared our Chicago upbringing.Dr. Byrd told me her 1st purchase upon graduation was personal stationery from Marshall Fields! I can remember that as if it were yesterday. She was a role model to me as a teacher in SFUSD and one of the smartest people I met. Dr Byrd often talked of Toni. She was a champion for the students and way smarter than most (all) of the men in the districts exec position. May her memory be for a blessing.

Mary Byrd was one of my SFUSD heroes. We shared a Chicago upbringing and more than one amusing Marshall Field’s stories. I was awed by her brilliance, practicality and commitment to students. She was heads and Shoulders above the rest and always warm, welcoming and open with me...who was “just a teacher”. She often mentioned Toni Lynn with love and pride. This site doesn’t have the term that reflects our connection. I chose ‘co-worker’ but really was her “mentee”. May Dr. Mary Byrd’s memory...
