Byles-Groton Memorial Home - Groton Obituary

MARY LOU FAHEY CARAS, age 92 of Groton, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025 at the home of her daughter and son in law. 


Mary Lou was born in New London on January 2, 1933 the daughter of Edmund and Grace Avery Fahey. She graduated from Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School.  After attending nursing school she worked as an LPN.


Mary Lou was a talented artist who trained under Robert Brackman in New York City. She remained passionate about the arts throughout her life.  She also was a member of the Avery Society in Groton.


She is survived by her daughter Martha Christina (Tony) and sons, Christopher Chapman, MD (Eunice) and Lawrence Chapman (Valerie) a step son Gordon Caras and her brother Edmund Fahey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brian and his wife Holly, Caitlin and her husband Brett, Shannon, Jennifer, Danny, Alexis and Chris and her great grandchildren, Kellen, Grayson, Delaney and Graham.


She was predeceased by her husbands Christopher Chapman and Charles Caras as well as her son James Chapman.


Thank you to Masonicare Hospice for their tremendous support and care especially Danielle, Brittany, and Mary Grace.


A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 8 at 1:30 at the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, 256 Mitchell St, Groton There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society,169 Old Colchester Road, Quaker Hill, CT 06375 or the Dementia Society of America, P.O. Box 600 Doylestown, PA 18901.

Martha Chris & Larry. I was so sad to read the passing of your mom. When I was a little and hung with Martha on Blueberry hill, she kept us in check. She was always kind to me. She was a fabulous painter. And made me eat salmon, lol. She´d say it´s good for you! Love you all, Linda Podbielski Reddy.
