Mary Ellen Kennedy nee Walsh passed away at home in Spring Lake on April 2, 2023. Mary Ellen was born in Newark, NJ. She lived most of her life in Mountainside, NJ before moving to Mantoloking Shores and Venice, Florida in her retirement and Spring Lake in recent years.
Mary Ellen graduated Muhlenburg Hospital School of Nursing, Fairleigh Dickinson University with a BS in Health Education and Kean College with a Masters in Guidance and Counseling. She earned these degrees while raising her children and participating in community activities. Mary
Ellen was a school nurse at Grover Cleveland School in Rahway, NJ, retiring in 2001. She was a parishioner of St. Catharine Church in Spring Lake. She was a former president of the Newcomers in Mountainside and a President of the Mermates Ladies Auxiliary of the Metedeconk River Yacht Club in Brick. Her hobbies included skiing, tennis and golf, and she loved taking her dogs for walks.


Mary Ellen was predeceased by her parents Franklin and Mary Walsh and her sister Bernice Clausen.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years William Kennedy; her daughter and son-in-law Maureen and Robert O’Shaughnessy of Atlanta, GA; her son and daughter-in-law William F. and Maryann Kennedy of Cranford; her son and daughter-in-law Keith and Colleen Kennedy of Point Pleasant; her sister Pat Lyons; and her eight grandchildren Molly, Erin, Meghan, Garrett, Will, Danny, Maeve, and Patrick.


Viewing hours will be held on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Hwy. 88, Brick. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Catharine Church in Spring Lake. Cremation will be private.
