Mary was a lifelong resident of Queen Anne Hill. She attended
St. Anne’s grade school and Holy Angels Academy. She graduated from the University of Washington with degrees in Sociology and Psychology. She married C. Merle Hanley, when he was in dental school; they were married for over 66 years.
Her parents, Dr. John H. Wadeson and Mary E. Studnica, sister Jacqulyn Muller, and son Tracy E. Hanley predeceased her.
Mary was a member and co-founder of Rose Gottstein Guild of Children’s Hospital, member of Queen Anne Arboretum Foundation, Seattle Art Museum, Alpha XI Delta Sorority, AAUW, and Women’s University Club. She volunteered extensively, notably with the American Red Cross, as a caseworker helping military personnel.
The American Red Cross, for her service and expertise to clients and military personnel, recognized her in 1994 as an “Unsung Volunteer Heroine”. Radio KIXI and Shoreline Savings Bank also honored her as “Citizen of the Day” in 1986.
Some of Mary’s hobbies included skiing and genealogy. She was also an avid and adventurous traveler, traveling to Europe, Mexico, Hawaii and Asia.
Mary is survived by her husband, Merle; sons, John (Beverly) and Patrick; daughter-in-law, June (Graham); grandchildren, Jessica (Mads), Stephanie (Ethan), Christine, Christopher and Allison; and step-grandchild, Laura.
Mary will be greatly missed, as she was truly a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend to those who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
