Porter and Hunt Funeral Home & Crematory Obituary

Mary Hines, 79, of Lizton, Indiana, departed this life at 11:25 AM, Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Avon Health and Rehab in Avon, Indiana after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. She was born December 23, 1940 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Kenneth and Virginia Holmes.

Mary graduated from Shortridge High School in 1958 and began her career as bookkeeper and worked in Insurance and Transportation. After her divorce, she worked at Chris’ Lizton Market where she was “Mary at the store” for a generation of kids. She was a devoted grandmother who never missed a birthday, ballgame, concert or show choir competition even if she had to travel to Washington to do so. She was an extremely loving, caring and honest person who always had room for one more. She was a fierce defender of the underdog and always told her boys “You can do can do anything you can put your mind to” and meant it.

She is survived by her two sons, Jeff (Kim) Hines and Greg (Jamie) Hines; four grandchildren, Ashtin, Trevor, Olivia and Elliot; Sister Patty (Gary) Pate; Brother, Bob Holmes, brother-in-law, Steve Bigham; Nieces, Mandy Pate and Jessica Eads; Nephews, Mark Miller,  Brad Pate, Josh Bigham, Randy Holmes and Bobby Holmes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ronnie Holmes and sister Judy Bigham

Visitation will be held Saturday, June 6th from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Porter & St. Pierre, 315 W Main St, Jamestown, with Service following visitation. Burial will take place at Lizton K of P Cemetery.

The family is extremely grateful for the loving care provided by the staff at Avon Health and Rehab. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 50 E 91st St #100, Indianapolis, IN 46240.

Not sure what to say?

Although I did not know Mary well, I do know she was a friendly woman who was easy to talk to - a strong, hard working woman who loved her family. My sympathies to all of her family who had to suffer with her as she battled with Alzheimer's. May you find comfort in your memories and knowing she is now at peace.

I was so blessed to live next door to your mom for many years !!! She always had a smile on her face and I was always welcomed anytime !! I will miss her !! Much love and light

I remember Mary with great memories from high school. We always had a good time together. Later when married, she embraced being a mother above all. You boys, Jeff and Greg were her life. She loved her family and heard of ball games she went to and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Sorry we lost touch the last several years, but she holds a special place in my heart. My sincere thoughts and prayers to all.

Thoughts and prayers. May you feel the comfort of God.

We are so sorry for your loss. I know how much you all loved Mary. She was a great mom and grandmother. May God bless her.

This is Casey Dunaway. My Mother Helen Wright & I send you our deepest condolences! Sorry we can't make it to the showing. We have many great memories of Mary. I was very young but I remember plus My Mother has told me lots of her memories. She wishes she could come but she doesn't get out much these days. We will be thinking of you.

To Jeff and Greg,
My sincere sympathies to you all.
