Our family got to know Mary O. through her father, our doctor in Owatonna. My mother was an excellent seamstress and struck up a deal with Dr. Roberts. My mother would sew outfits for Mary O., in particular some ice skating outfits, and Dr. Roberts would forget about a few doctor bills. This was clearly a different era than today.

My Aunt Mary O. created a huge wake of energy as she passed through this world. If there was an event and she was at it, you knew it. She was usually the most beautiful woman in any room but more than that, she was smart and unafraid to do whatever needed to be done to achieve progress. Anyone could sense from a great distance that she cared about justice for all and anyone who had any notion of being involved with harming others had better run off and do it in another county because you just...
