CLOSED-Harvey Family Funeral Home Obituary

Mary Marietta VanAlstine Jacobsen passed away peacefully early in the morning of September 1, 2023 at Providence Mount St. Vincent in Seattle, WA, her home for almost 17 years.  She was 95 years old.

Mary’s life began life on January 30, 1928, in Georgetown, South Seattle, where her father owned Van’s Drug Store. She was the youngest of seven children. She spent almost all of her life in Seattle, attending Catholic schools.  She graduated from Immaculate High School.

Family was important to her, and she spent a lot of time taking care of nieces and nephews. In November 1952, she met Reidar Jacobsen on a blind date. Things progressed quickly and they were married on May 9, 1953,  In 1956, they welcomed daughter Stephanie.

In her quiet way, Mary spent much of her life caring for others—her nieces and nephews, her mom and mother-in-law, the students and sisters at St. Luke, her girl scouts, and the neighborhood kids. She was one of the many neighborhood moms everyone could count on.  Later in life, and the best of all, she loved caring for her grandson, Jacob.

We all remember the happy family gatherings Mary hosted, from family dinners, reunions, and holidays. No one could decorate a Christmas tree like she could, or make caramels and spritz and a perfect prime rib!

Mary is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Schuler (Greg), her grandson Jacob Schuler (Shannon) and her precious great grandchildren, Peter and Mary.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Hattie VanAlstine and her six older siblings, Chester, Marguerite, Stella, Gene, Gena, and Bill and her beloved husband, Reidar.

A funeral Mass for Mary will be on Thursday, September 14 at 10:30 AM, at Holy Rosary Parish, located at 630 Seventh Avenue N. In Edmonds, WA. Burial will be immediately following at Holyrood Cemetary, 205 NE 205th St. Shoreline.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mary’s memory to Providence Mount St. Vincent, in thanksgiving for the many years of loving care they gave Mary and many others.  Donations can be made online at https://give.providence.org/wa/mountstvincent
