Mary was such a beautiful teacher, mentor to me as a young piano student--when I learned of her passing and saw her image, I had this overwhelming feeling of love for her and remembered the way that she was such an amazing teacher--something you know at the time as a kid, and yet realize more and more as you become an adult, and a parent. Would that I could have had my son learn from her. What an extraordinary gift of learning music she instilled in me--the piano, yes, but music. She felt...

Mary was my pedagogy instructor. She was amazing, I will never forget her or her love and exuberance. I confided to her my secret ambition to be the best (which I realize is ridiculous) and she reacted by saying, "ah, that´s too bad." Meaning, how much of life would I miss out on by always comparing and striving to be the best. I loved her perspective, she helped me adjust mine. She was so curious and encouraged me so well. She is a treasure. I will miss her.

Mary was my piano teacher for about 4 years. Always patient, supportive, and warm-hearted, she inspired this not so talented senior citizen to do her best. She was a real blessing to me.

I just learned this evening (August 20/22) of Mary´s passing. I studied piano and Piano Pedagogy with Mary at PSU in the late 1980´s and early 1990´s. Her teaching approach revolutionized my personal piano playing and teaching styles, and the revolution continues to this day. Mary taught piano to 3 of my 4 children. The 4th child thought Mary had the coolest name: Mary Hulk Hogen! We became friends, with many lively discussions about music, raising children, religion and the art of living....

My heart goes out to the friends and family of Mary. I will always remember her in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica where I had the pleasure of meeting her. She was up for all the adventures Leah had on offer. Mary was all smiles and quick to laugh. It was a joy and a privilege to meet the mother of my dear friend. Wow - what an interesting life Mary lived.

Mary was a marvel. Such an engaged educator and friend. She lived a full and interesting life.

Our deepest condolences. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Mary was my mentor, my friend , confidant and occasional walking buddy. I met her when I started teaching piano at one of her workshops at her house in Lake Oswego. Always welcoming, a positive lovely person. I will miss her.
