Apr 3, 1922 – Mar 1, 2016 (Age 93)
Mary Dodd Loveland (April 3, 1922 – March 1, 2016) was born in Schenectady, NY, the oldest of seven children born to Rachel Elizabeth Hall and Arthur Dodd Snyder, a math professor at Union College. Mary Dodd loved education, books, music, and everything French. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1944, received her master's degree in French from Middlebury College, and worked during WWII as a translator in NYC.
Mary Dodd moved to Wilkes-Barre, PA to teach high school French at Wilkes-Barre Day School. She sang in the choir of First Presbyterian Church where she met and, in 1951, married Atty. George Loveland. George had recently returned from France where he worked with the American Friends Service Committee resettling families after the war.
Mary Dodd left teaching to care for their daughters. She sang semi-professionally in the choir, the Wyoming Valley Oratorio Society, and the Mozart Club. Mary Dodd later worked as legal secretary for George until his death in 1979, then for Atty. Allan Hollander until she moved to Milwaukee, WI in 1984 to be near two of her daughters and her grandchildren. In Milwaukee, she was a legal secretary for the State Public Defender's Office, volunteered at Literacy Services of WI, and sang in the Immanuel Presbyterian Church choir.
Mary Dodd Loveland is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Margaret (Robert) McMullin, brothers-in-law Maurice (Betsy) Whitaker and Charles (Fran) Bennett, sisters-in-law Sylvia (William) Snyder and Mary (Arthur) Snyder, daughters Katharine Dodd Loveland (William Budda), Amy (Thomas) Fritz , Dr. Jennifer Loveland-Curtze (Arthur Curtze), grandchildren Anna Fritz, George Ian Fritz, Dr. Tierney Marie Loveland-Grace (Darrell Grace), Samuel George Loveland, Alexander Charles Curtze, great granddaughter, Kira Katharine Grace, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers William, Arthur, and Thomas and sisters Betsy and Fran.
Mary Dodd's family gives thanks for her excellent care in the Special Care Unit of the Milwaukee Catholic Home and from VITAS Hospice.
A celebration of Mary Dodd's life is planned for later this spring. Memorial donations may be made to Literacy Services of Wisconsin, 555 N. Plankinton Ave, Milwaukee, 53203.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your Mom was my French teacher at WBDS for seven years and we also sang in the church choir together. I remember her kindness and patience. God bless her and all of you

To the Family: We are so sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. Our niece, Lee Ann Earl Sedor, has been friends with your sister, Jenny, for as long as I can remember. Through Jenny, I met your Mom a few times and remember her as a very friendly person. I remember your Dad as being very friendly too. Your Mom's accomplishments are quite impressive - she had a very full life. I know she will be sadly missed by those whose lives she touched. Ron and Lenore Lewis
