Fortuna Funeral Home - Independence Obituary

Mary Marek (nee D’Atri), 99 ½ , passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 6, 2022.  Beloved wife of the late Lawrence Marek Sr.  Loving mother of Lawrence Jr. (Lynn), Robert (Andrea), Maryann, Barbara Basnett (Mark), and Beverly (William).  Cherished grandmother of Bryan (Jen), Cristen, Megan, Matthew, Devon (Rachel), Trevor (Andrea), Taylor Kurcsak (Andrew), Connor, Grace, Ava, and Dominic. Aunt, great-aunt and friend to many.

Mary was the youngest child of the late Antonio and Maria D’Atri (nee Scalpelli).  The D’Atri family emigrated from the Abruzzo region of Italy from the City of Caramonico Terme.  She was preceded in death by her siblings: Marinnina, Teodorina DiMonte (Guiseppe), Clara DelRosa (August), Quintina Jakubowski (Edward), Anthony D’Atri (Marcella), and Aristodemo D’Atri (Susan).

Mary and Lawrence were married on May 31, 1952 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.  Mary was deeply rooted in her faith and was a dedicated member of St. Michael Catholic Church where she participated in the observance of Eucharistic Adoration for over 15 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who instilled in her family the importance of togetherness, love and support. She cherished the time she spent with her “little and big pumpkins.”  Mary will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon at St. Michael Catholic Church.  Interment All Saints Cemetery.  Per family request, masks are required at the funeral home and church.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or The Congregation of St. Joseph, 3430 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, Ohio 44111.
