Celebrating the Life of Mary Grace "Mim" Queen Megginson
October 1, 1926 – September 11, 2025
At sunrise or sunset, with a cup of tea in hand and the High Point Enterprise on her lap, Mary Grace "Mim" Queen Megginson found joy in the rhythms of daily life. On September 11, 2025, she passed away peacefully at Pennybyrn in High Point, leaving behind a legacy of faith, hard work and fierce devotion to family and community. She was 98.
Born October 1, 1926, at her parents' home near Casar, NC, Mary Grace was the daughter of Joseph Asbury Queen and Mittie Newton Queen. She grew up in a household that valued education and determination. Her mother famously said she had not raised "any farmer's wives," and indeed Mary Grace flourished academically, graduating valedictorian of her high school class. She studied at Gardner-Webb College before transferring to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she earned her degree in journalism.
Her passion for words began at The Daily Tar Heel while she was a student at UNC and later carried her to the Shelby Daily Star, the High Point Enterprise, and the UNC News Bureau. It was there she met editor Holt McPherson, whose encouragement shaped both her career and her family's future - and who would later help guide her husband in establishing his dental practice in High Point.
On June 9, 1950, she married Linzy Price "L.P." Megginson, Jr. at Clover Hill Methodist Church in Lawndale, NC. Together, they raised five children and built a home in High Point where love, laughter, and good food abounded. Generations will remember the comfort of Mim's famous Thanksgiving cornbread dressing, scalloped oysters, chocolate pound cake, and biscuits sizzling in her cast-iron skillet.
Mary Grace had a gift for making others feel cared for. She gave generously of her time and talents, serving her United Methodist church, supporting Girl Scouts, and providing publicity for the Guilford County and North Carolina Dental Societies. She danced with the Debon-Aire Dance Club, and as President of the Horticultural Society she led trips across the U.S. and Europe, guiding fellow enthusiasts through extraordinary gardens from Vancouver to Versailles. Her leadership, hospitality, and warmth left an enduring imprint on her community.
At home, her own gardens flourished with hydrangeas, dogwoods, rhododendrons, and coral-pink azaleas. She delighted in hosting her grandchildren for elegant tea parties among the blossoms, serving from the porcelain tea sets she lovingly collected on her travels.
Though she never learned to swim, Mim embraced adventure. She rafted the Nantahala River rapids, camped in a pop-up trailer at Cape Hatteras and Stone Mountain, and marveled at sunsets in Key West. Her journeys carried her from Vancouver Island to New Orleans, Toronto, and the Bahamas-where she even donned a helmet for an undersea walk at Hartley's. Grand gardens and national parks brought her wonder, from the majesty of the Grand Canyon to the red rocks of Sedona.
Her love of nature was rivalled only by her love of learning. Rarely without a book in hand, she read late into the night, devouring the works of Jane Austen and Louis L'Amour, the sweeping Outlander series, and every British period drama - none more beloved than Downton Abbey.
Mary Grace is survived by her children, Margaret Fontana, Mary Lin Brewer (Bryan Smith), Mike Megginson (Beth Wagner), and Susan Latapie; her ten grandchildren, Katie Rendeiro (Mike), Sarah Bipes (Dan), Madison Brewer (Tana), Sabine Hannon (Brian), Megan Diffenbaugh (Tony), Andy Brewer (Suzie Miller), Sophie Latapie (Greg Moore), Laura Lott (Austin), Mary Rose Lee (Nathan), and Wallace Megginson; and nine great-grandchildren, Olivia Bipes, Peyton Diffenbaugh, Alessandra Rendeiro, Thomas Bipes, Nolan Brewer, Romy Latapie, Jack Lott, Blair Hannon, and Aymeric Latapie. She is also survived by her cousin, Beth Sheppard Lattimore, who was raised by her parents.
She was predeceased by her husband, L.P. and daughter, Penny; her siblings, Joseph Asbury Queen Jr., Helen Queen Johnson, and Martha Queen Barrett; and foster sisters, Teresa Weaver and Terry Sigmon.
The family wishes to thank Rebecca Royal and the dedicated staff at Hughes House and Pennybyrn for their loving care over the past 14 years.
Mim's life will be celebrated on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 2 p.m., at Sechrest-Davis Funeral Home in High Point, with Rev. Glenn Myers officiating. Friends and loved ones are warmly invited to attend. A private burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery in Lawndale.
