Mary Meyers Obituary
Alice Griffin Myers
February 4, 1932 - November 13, 2025
Raleigh, North Carolina - Mary Alice Griffin Myers was born on February 4, 1932, in Martin County, North Carolina, to Wendell Washington Griffin and 1932, Manning Griffin. Their family home and farmland, called The Islands, is tucked into a tributary of the Roanoke River near Williamston. Alice studied art at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro and met Grady Bennett Myers, Jr. at a UNC intervarsity event.
After graduation, Alice taught high school art in Atlanta, Greensboro, and Richmond. Alice and Bennett married in 1962 and together raised two sons, Raleigh and Peter. The family lived in Chapel Hill, Salem, Virginia, and Concord, New Hampshire, before moving to Fayetteville in 1980. In 2000, Alice and Bennett built a home in the Solterra community in Durham, where they tended the community garden, hosted arts cafe nights, and made the best of friends. They moved to the Cardinal retirement community in Raleigh in 2024 to be closer to their sons and families.
Alice dedicated her life to her family and her art. She painted in oil and watercolor, from still life and portraits to landscapes, abstracts, and murals. Alice showed and sold her works over the years. Her oil monotype of Osprey Point, Maine won a juried competition in 1999 and was featured in the Journal of the Moffitt Cancer Center. In 2019, she and Bennett hosted a retrospective show in their home. In 2024 and 2025, Alice donated watercolor and woodcut pieces to shows sponsored by Weldon in Action and the Halifax Arts Council.
Alice joins her parents, Strelsa and Wendell, sister Betty Lou, and brother Fred in the church triumphant. Alice leaves behind husband Bennett; brother Wade Griffin and wife Nancy; son Raleigh and wife Jenni; son Peter and wife Jennifer; granddaughters Evelyn and Lily; and many dear friends and extended family members.
We remember Alice as a bright, kind artist who laughed easily, loved generously, and made everything more beautiful.
