Mary Nigut

Indianola

Mary Margaret (Halliday) Nigut, of Indianola, wife of Charles Nigut for nearly 33 years, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2017 at Mercy Hospice surrounded by her family. Mary died from ovarian cancer, but in the end the most amazing thing happened, cancer lost its strength in her and grace appeared.

Mary was born in Olivia, Minnesota on April 16, 1962 and grew up in nearby Spicer. She studied nursing at the College of St. Benedict graduating in 1984 and received her masters degree in nursing with a clinical specialization in anesthesia from Drake University in 1996. She worked at the Iowa Vein Center in West Des Moines as a nurse anesthetist for the past 16 years.

She enjoyed cooking and baking cookies for the grandchildren. She was an avid reader of mysteries and every spring she planted beautiful wild flowers at the family farm. Mary enjoyed working with her husband on many projects including a complete remodeling of their home while living in Seattle. She traveled extensively in South America, Norway, Ireland and throughout the U.S. She will be remembered for her smile and laughter, positive outlook and selflessness.

Mary will be missed by her family especially her husband Chuck. Mary is also survived by her two stepsons, Rush (Beth) of Des Moines, Iowa and Roman (Jennifer) of Kennett, Missouri. She is survived by four sisters all living in Minnesota, Bonnie (Swede) Elfering, Pat Miller, Sue (Ed) Benson, and Judy (John) Jacobs. She is also survived by sister-in-law Lori Halliday and brother-in-law Dan Rupp. Mary's grandchildren, Will, Alec, Madelynn and Brooks, brought her great joy. Mary loved family gatherings with her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mary was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Loretta Halliday, her sister Linda Rupp, and her brother David Halliday.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017 from 1-2 p.m., with a Celebration of Life immediately following at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University in Clive. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice, 5820 Winwood Drive, Johnston, IA 50131.

Not sure what to say?

Oh, Mary why you, so young, so smart, and so beautiful. I was a friend, classmate and church member. We had siblings in the same grades and as friends. Mary was the smart, popular girl, great grades, looks, and everyone, loved you. I last saw you at your mom's funeral, and you looked amazing. This news brought me great sorrow. I wish I had gotten the chance to tell you how much I admired you and loved you. My deepest sympathy to all your family.
Laura (Klein) Ruhland

I worked with Mary at the Vein Center for a few years. What an amazing person! Down to Earth and a very positive attitude. She taught me a lot about life. So sorry for your loss.
