Proto, Mary "Mae"
Mary "Mae" Proto, age 95, the wife of the late Louis S. Proto, Sr., passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, October 12, 2013. Born in Bridgeport to the late Daniel and Lucretia English, Mary was a resident of Fairfield for the past sixty-two years.
Mary was a strong supporter of Bridgeport and volunteered her time for the American Cancer Society, the Heart Association, the MS Society, the Fairfield Library, various PTAs and the Fairfield Woman's Club where she crocheted lap robes for veterans. She also was a Vice President of the Widow/Widower's Club at St. John's Episcopal Church for over twenty years after the death of her husband. Mary was also active in the Holy Family Rosary Guild.
Mary loved to dance especially line dancing; listen to music; play cards and was a very social person. Her family and friends were the love of her life. She was well known at the Grasmere Eldercare Center which she attended for over ten years.
Mary is survived by her two loving children, Louis S. Proto, Jr. of Franklinton, NC and Lois Holly of Fairfield; four devoted grandchildren, Lucretia Rochlin and her husband, Scott of Westport, Lisa DiPaolo of Fairfield, Charity Cannella and her husband, Michael of Wake Forest, NC and Louis S. Proto III and his wife, Daniela of Shelton; her sister, Concetta Szabo of Fairfield; ten adoring great grandchildren, Lance Corporal Blake DiPaolo, Logan, Victoria and Mikey DiPaolo; Brittany, Kendall and Taylor Rochlin; Ava and Vincent Proto and Braeden Cannella; and, many wonderful nephews, nieces and great friends.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Antoinette Medvegy, Lucretia Medvegy and Lena Csizmazia and her brothers, Joseph and Louis English; her son-in-law, William Holly; her daughter-in-law, Susan Proto and her cherished grandson, Charley Rochlin.
Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road in Fairfield Center. Interment to follow in Lawncroft Cemetery. Friends may greet her family on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank her caregiver, Primrose Brown for the excellent care, dedication and love she gave to Mary these past four years.

Lois, I just learned today of your mother's passing. I am so very sorry. We had lots of laughs and good times growing up and I'm happy our Moms were friends. Your Mom passed on my mothers birthday. She is free of pain and worry now and will watch over you and your family. God bless you and yours.
