Mary Carol was a mentor to me, personally and professionally, in my first job as a lawyer back in the early 1980s. She was a wise observer of the human comedy; I learned more from her about client relations than anyone else. On our lunch hour walks she taught me (a newcomer to Oregon) the names of all the trees and plants we saw, and she helped me quit smoking by bringing me a little gold star for every day I went without a cigarette.
