Mary Jane Smith was born on November 11, 1957, in Beaumont, Texas, to Edward E. Smith and Ruby Smith Bell. She attended Charlton Pollard High School and worked for several years with American Building Maintenance, as well as Tompkins Catering.
Mary was a gentle, soft-spoken, loving, caring, and generous woman. She would share what she had with anyone in need, including feeding stray cats when they were hungry. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends.
Mary attended Jackson Street Memorial COGIC, where her uncle, Superintendent Roy Lewis, serves as Pastor.
She passed away and transitioned to her heavenly home on June 30, 2025, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.
Celebrating Mary’s life and cherishing her memory are her daughters, Shirley Franklin (Kenneth), and Brittany Smith; son, Edward Smith; three granddaughters, Teylar Smith, Kennedi Smith, and Bellanie Smith; sisters, Barbara Tompkins (Leo) and Shirley Miller. She also leaves behind her aunts, Gwendolyn Antoine and Betty Meredith; a niece, and a great-niece; three great-nephews; and a host of cousins and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Edward E. Smith and Ruby Smith Bell; her siblings, Edward Jr., Anthony, Joseph Smith, and Rose Smith-Trahan.
