Mary Campbell Jones Sternberger


 


Mary Campbell Jones Sternberger, 93, of Wilmington, died Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.


 


Mary was born February 18, 1924 in Harnett County, NC, a daughter of the late Junie Clarence Campbell and Mamie Mann Campbell. Her first husband, Ammie Jones, two brothers, and five sisters, preceded her in death.


 


Mary was a member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary and a member of Pine Valley Baptist Church. She retired from the Singer Plant after 29 years of service. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.


 


She is survived by her beloved husband, Frederick B. Sternberger; three daughters, Barbara O’Rourke (Richard), and Lynne VanStory, all of Wilmington, and Pam Kelly (Ricky) of Atkinson, NC; a step-son, Ken Sternberger (Sherry) of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Sharon O’Rourke Berry (Patrick), Deborah O’Rourke Quinn (Jeff), and Michael O’Rourke; two great-grandchildren, Shane O’Rourke and Alex Haynes; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Jones and Dora Ann Campbell; and several nieces and nephews.


 


A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at Andrews Market Street Chapel with Rev. Melvin Hall officiating. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.


 


In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to Pine Valley Baptist Church, 3940 Shipyard Blvd, Wilmington, NC 28403, or to Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), Chapter 11, 4601 Park Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28403, or to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Our thoughts and prayers to all of you. I met Mary while working at the then Singer facility. Mary was always one that would make you smile when she entered the room. God blessed those of us that he gave the opportunity to meet this wonderful lady. She brightened many peoples lives.
