VOMVOLAKIS, Mary (Assimos) - Of Fenton, age 91, died Thursday, August 19, 2021 at Regency of Grand Blanc.


Mary (Assimos) Vomvolakis was born in Patra, Greece on August 23rd, 1929. Daughter of Antonios and Katina Asimakopoulos.


Mary will be remembered for being a true social butterfly. She was involved with many church and local organizations and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. The many organizations included; Daughters of Penelope, past Secretary, Philoptohos Society, Past President, served many years on the Church Parish Council, Past City of Flint City Council Member, Past Sunday School Teacher, International Institute Member & Translator, and served for many, many years on the Church Decorating Committee for ALL FUNDRAISERS, which was one of her greatest joys.


Mary also loved to garden and travel. But her true passion was spending time with her friends at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.


Upon coming to the United States Mary's family eventually settled in Flint, Michigan and opened a grocery store downtown. Mary met and married her late husband, Emmanuel "Mike" Vomvolakis, and would go on to have two sons, Theodore "Ted", and Antonios "Tony." Mike and Mary would also become the proud owners of the Raincheck Lounge, an establishment that would become a Flint staple for many years.


Mary especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. They remember many happy memories with their Yiayia Mary going to see a movie and spending the night playing checkers and giggling at funny movies.


Surviving are son, Tony Vomvolakis and her grandchildren, Katerina "Kitty" and Stephanie Vomvolakis, and their mother, Maria, Emmanuel "Manny" Vomvolakis, and Paizley Vomvolakis and many nieces and nephews.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Emmanuel "Mike" Vomvolakis, son, Theodore "Ted" Vomvolakis, parents Antonios and Katina Assimakopoulos and brothers John and Nick Assimos.


Funeral service will be held at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc, MI at 1:00pm Wednesday, August 25, 2021. The Very Reverend Father Jarred Russell officiating.


Burial in Crestwood Cemetery.


Visitation 3:00p.m.– 8:00p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Trisagion service will also be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
