Funeral services will be Friday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. at Gretna High School, 11335 S. 204th St., for Army Cpl. Matthew L. Alexander, 21, of Gretna. He was an active duty member of the U.S. Army with A Company 5/20, Infantry 3-2 SBCT, stationed out of Fort Lewis, Wash.

He was killed May 6 while serving in Baqubah, Iraq.

Matthew is survived by his wife, Kara; parents, Melvin and Monica Alexander, all of Gretna; brother and sister-in-law, Marshall and Kiona Alexander of Omaha; grandparents, Bill and Doris Alexander of Sergeant, Neb., Don and Darleen Auch of Lesterville, S.D., Dave and Fern Colgrove of Wymore, Neb., Joyce Boerger of Lincoln, Neb., Ralph and Rose Spier of Clatonia, Neb.; great-grandparents, Irma Alexander of Burwell, Neb., Rose Schorzmann of Menno, S.D.; mother-in-law, Jane Boerger of Gretna; father-in-law, Gene Boerger of Gallatin, Tenn.; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Thursday evening at Gretna Community Church. Family and friends will greet visitors from 5 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be at Elkhorn Cemetery.

Because Matthew is a former member of the Gretna High School Band, in lieu of flowers, family suggests memorials to the Matthew Alexander Memorial Fund at Pinnacle Bank. The memorial contributions will be used to further local bands. Roeder Mortuary, Inc. in Gretna is in charge of arrangements.
