We shared our first name, and to a 10-year-old kid that was the coolest thing! You were the most influential man in my life during my young, troubled years in Gold Beach, OR, and I never forgot how you took me under your wing. I learned Shakespeare and proper running technique (Renaissance Man!). Somehow, you managed to get me onto the 6th grade Cross Country team while only in the 5th grade, and that completely changed my life! You were my best coach! I still remember crossing the finish...

Mr Doty ... Like Vince, I was also one of your many students you taught in Gold Beach, Oregon back in middle school. I will never forget walking into your classroom the first day of school with classical music playing in the background, desks arranged in groups, rather than rows (something fairly new and outrageous at the time!). You forced us to memorize Shakespeare ... "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players ..." You didn't make it to the final stages, Matt. You...

I received an e-mail about Mr. Doty's passing today. I was a student of his over a decade ago, in the 8th grade. Mr. Doty was one of the few teachers who encouraged me, as a young student, and recognized in me some kind of potential.

I'm now in graduate school, on my way to becoming a professor. The encouragement that Mr. Doty gave me as a student has stayed with me until this very day. It sounds cliche, I suppose, but it's true nonetheless.

My condolences to Matt's circle of famiy and friends. I knew him in grade school, at Robert Gray. I always thought he was one of the nicest boys in the class. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.
