A Life Dedicated to Service

For those who are anxious or tired or losing focus on the war effort, the friends of Matthew Garvey would like you to consider his life.

`It was a life dedicated to the service of the people of America," said his friend, Rick Helton, who served with him in the Marine Corps.

Matthew Garvey enlisted in 1981 at the age of 18. In his 10-year career, he would make sergeant and become a squad leader in 2nd Anglico, an elite scout team that went into hostile territory ahead of ground troops. He served in Beirut and in operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield.

Mr. Garvey, 37, joined the Fire Department in 1995 and earned his way into the elite Squad 1 unit based in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

He was recently accepted to law school, was an active Marine reservist, studied Kung Fu, played guitar, took photographs, climbed to the summit of Mount Rainier and was a rescue instructor for the Fire Department. Books on his nightstand included: Don Quixote, War and Peace, The Iliad, Moby Dick. "No one word can describe him," said his friend and stationhouse mate Gerald Smyth.

There are three: New York firefighter.

Not sure what to say?

I grew up in Elmhurst Queens knowing the Garvey family. I will always be grateful to each and every one of them for raising a young man who gave his life as a firefighter in such a horrific time. Where I live on Shelter Island our Firefighters are volunteers and we treat them with respect and reverence.
My prayers will forever include Matthew , a brave young man and hero. Rest in Peace and may you fly on angels wings.

We just just figured out that my husband Captain Steve Hunter was 37 yrs old on 9/11 the same age as Matthew Garvey. Matthew would be 61 yrs old today. We are going to display his badge and never forget Matthew Garvey in our home here in Scottsdale Arizona. Matthew, Thank you for your Service! Steve and Lana Hunter

My son Matthew Hunter chose Matthew Garvey´s badge to honor him by climbing 110 flights of stairs for the 911 Tower Challenge 2025. He completed the challenge and earned his first challenge coin. Matthew Hunter is 20 years old, and is in the process to becoming a Firefighter, following in his father´s footsteps. His Father Captain Steve Hunter is a Captain for The Scottsdale Fire Department for the last 38 years.

I was the First Brigade Platoon Commander, 2D ANGLICO (Air and Naval Gunfire Liasion Company) for Matthew D. Garvey and he was one of my team leaders. He was truly an exceptional Marine and EVERYONE had the utmost respect for him. I recommended him for meritorious promotion to the rank of Sergeant, which he most certainly deserved. I found out of his death on 9/11, 2002 from the 2D ANGLICO network of Marines. Every September 11 I say a prayer for him and as time goes by looking forward to...
