William J. Burke & Sons / Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Matthew G. Johnson Sr. of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 4, 2021 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on Oct. 16, 1930 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late J. Moylan and Marion (Elliott) Johnson.  He is predeceased by two sisters, Marion Mochon and Joan (Victor) Gomez. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 65 years Earline K. Britton, his four children, Kathleen (Thomas) Cosmus, Maureen (Fred) Lynch, Matthew G. (Bernadette) Johnson, Jr. and Kevin (Renee) Johnson and seven grandchildren, Meghan Lynch, Michael, Joshua, Emily, Shannon, Kyle and Zacharey Johnson. Matt was also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Matt was a 1950 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. He enlisted in the US Coast Guard and was honorably discharged in 1954. Matt had a distinguished career with Tobin First Prize in Albany with over 40 years of dedicated service. He was promoted as Large Accounts Manager in 1978, honored as the Salesman of the Year in 1990 and retired in 1998.

A resident of Troy, NY for twenty five years, he was a former member of Watervliet BPO Elks Lodge and was a Past President of St. Vincent de Paul Society and member of St. Michael’s Church in Troy NY.

An avid antique automobile enthusiast, he participated in many local and area car shows and was a member of the Saratoga Auto Museum and Buick Club of America. As family and faith always remained at the forefront of his life, he was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Clement’s Church. Along with his wife Earline, they enjoyed many vacations together, including car meets in Hershey, PA, vacations to Aruba, Hawaii, Ireland and cruises in the southern Caribbean.

The family is grateful to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Saratoga Hospital, especially Dr. Madigan and the nursing staff on D-1. We would also like to thank the staff at DCI for the care provided over the years.

Relatives and friends may call from 10:30am to 12:30pm Friday, June 11, 2021 at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in the church at 1pm Friday afternoon, then proceed to the burial in the family plot at St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave.

Because of Covid restrictions, please no flowers. If you wish, memorials may be made in his name to Catholic Charities of Warren, Washington and Saratoga Counties, 142 Regent St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

Arrangements are under the direction of The William J Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, (518-584-5373) and online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.

Remembering Fondly All the Tall Tales We Shared with Laughter What a Wonderful Gentleman & Friend! Love, Jeannie & Eric

Dear Johnsons~ We send our love, prayers, and deepest condolences to You, Earline, Tom, and Family. Matt was one in a million! We truly treasure having known and spent time with him... especially our summers at the racetrack. Sharing good stories and laughing together will be remembered always. God Bless Matt and May He Rest In Peace. Love, Jeannie, Eric & Abigail

Earline and family— so sorry for your loss. Matt was a good friend of my brother, Ed. I can still remember when I was young Ed and Matt coming to our house in the wee hours of morning to make breakfast after a night out.

Our Sympathy goes out to the Johnson family. Uncle Matt was loved by everyone and always surrounded by friends. He had a big heart and always looked up to by his sisters, Joan and Marion. Family was everything to Matt. He will be missed by so many people and will always have a place in our heart.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Rest in Peace.

Love always,
Barb, John and Scott Mochon

Gentleman describes Matt to a T. My wife, Mary, had a special connection to the old days of Hygrade Market (Johnson's). She appreciated how Matt shared the stories, and old photos, of all of the butchers who worked alongside her Grandfather. Matt was a story teller, and he will be missed by many. Condolences to Earline and family. Rest in peace.

Mrs. Johnson, Matty and families . So sorry for your loss.

Dear Mrs Johnson and family,
I am so sorry to learn of Mr Johnson's passing. Mr J was one in a million and heaven got a little bit brighter upon his arrival. My memories of spending time with your family bring me so much joy, Hampton Beach, Sunday mornings at your house, etc. His kind and Joyful heart will never be forgotten. I am sure my dad was there waiting for him with a refreshment!
May God bring you peace in this very difficult time.
Love always, Kathy
