Matt was brilliantly witty with words. Here's a limerick he wrote for me, a part Potwatomi Native American. It was not easy finding words that rhyme with my tribe. You might think I need a lobotomy To befriend a part-Potowatomi But he's gentle and kind and very refined And his friendship means quite a lot to me. I wish I could remember the limerick he wrote for his friend Professor John Dizikes. I do recall he came up with an outstanding rhyme with Dizikes. I miss Mattie. Lou Rose

That's a great photo - looks like he's in the cockpit of his canoe. What a knowing smile, what a generous gaze! I miss Mattie more than I can say. It makes me feel warm and happy just to remember our times together.

The man had so many wonderful qualities. The ones that come to mind first are his sense of humor and quick wit in word play, his compelling need to help others, his outside-of the box creativity in solving engineering problems, his commitment to traditional folk music and, most of all, his genuine love and endearing friendship.
