Groton - Matthew E. Phibbs, 92, of 235 Lestertown Road, Groton, formerly of Montville and Niantic, passed away on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at Fairview in Groton.

He was born on May 4, 1920, in Schenectady, N.Y., the son of John and Agnes (Smith) Phibbs.

Mr. Phibbs was married on Aug. 12, 1946, in New London, to the late Patricia (Davidson) Phibbs.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he had worked for the Pfizer Inc. in Groton from 1947 until his retirement in 1980. For several years, he then worked for Cardinal Honda in Groton.

Mr. Phibbs was a former member of the Montville Senior Citizens and a member of the American Legion. Although not a betting man, he loved watching the horses run at Saratoga Race Track in New York.

His survivors include three children and their spouses, Rita and Raymond Kreul of Melbourne, Fla., Ellen and Glen Rosenfeldt of Waterford, Thomas and Gail Phibbs of Mansfield; three grandchildren and their spouses, Paul and Juliana Kreul and their sons, Andrew and Jeremy, Meredith and Michael Dow, Eric and Kristi Rosenfeld and their children, Alexis and Tyson; his sister, Mary Ann Phibbs and her life partner, Marilyn MacBride, of New York.

He was also predeceased by his brother, Edward.

Funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London. Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to his service. His burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
