When Matthew T. Grimm joined his cousin's racing team in the summer of 2004, it was his first experience working with the high-performance stock cars that were the backbone of the American Speed Association. "He always wanted to be there to help people _ that was always his goal," Bryan Reffner, a cousin and driver. "And he wanted to do something but would push himself to see if he could do it better." Grimm, 21, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., was killed Jan. 15 by a roadside bomb in Mosul. A 2004 high school graduate, he was assigned to Fort Bliss. He played football, wrestled and dabbled in weightlifting in school. Shane Benitz, an assistant wrestling coach, described him as a "powerhouse" wrestler with a muscular frame. "He was just a great kid, a good athlete, hardworking, everything you want in a member of a high school sports team," Benitz said. Immediately after high school, Grimm began working for Reffner Motorsports, unloading cars from the previous race and getting them ready for the next. "He was always ready to take on a new challenge," said Reffner. He is survived by his parents, Eldon and Jean.

Not sure what to say?

Matthew this July 4th I am reminded of your sacrifice for our country. I miss you so much and some day we will be together again. Love mom

As Memorial Day draws near I am reminded of your selfless dedication of service to our country. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. Although you have been gone 18 years it feels like just a short time ago. You are always on my mind and in my prayers. I miss you so much Matt. Sending love and hugs to you and dad. Love, Mom

Matthew as I look back on the anniversary of your death I still mourn the loss of a special son. This day is as vivid as it was when we got the terrible news. I see your pictures on the wall and find myself talking to you and wishing you could talk back. I miss you so much and so does your brother. Both Andrew and Jacqui make sure to tell their sons every year about your sacrifice. Some day we will be together and what a great day that will be. Give dad a hug from me too. Miss you both so...

Happy Heavenly birthday Matthew. You are so missed and loved. You are my hero and I wait for the day we can be together again. Until then I am sending hugs to you and dad. Love you, mom

God bless the Grimm family. Matt is always remembered.

Thinking of you today Matt. You gave your life for me and my family to have ours. RIP Laura Eckels

Matthew this Memorial Day I am reminded of the ultimate sacrifice you gave for our country. When you left us you took a large piece of my heart with you. You were the best son a parent could ask for and I know you have a special place in Heaven. Love and miss you so much. Mom

With the 17th year anniversary of your death, it still seems like just yesterday and the heartache never goes away. You are my hero and I am so proud if you. Those of us left behind still speak of you trying to remember all the funny and sweet moments. Until we meet again, Matt, know your are loved and missed. Mom

I was one of nurses on duty at CSH when you came in to our over flow EMT unit . I was the Officer that identified you and placed the American Flag on you. I honored you then and I honor you now . On every Memorial Day I remember you and pray for you as I did then and will always. You will never be forgotten! I pray for your family
