Before Matthew W. Holloway was sent to Iraq, he bought his new wife a truck and stuck a bumper sticker on it that said: "Freedom isn't free." Holloway, 21, of Fulton, Texas, was killed Jan. 13 when a mine exploded near their Humvee in Anbar province. He was based in Corpus Christi, Texas. Holloway thought about joining the Marine Corps but became a reservist after graduating from high school in 2001 so he could go to college and become a family doctor. An avid fisherman, Matthew Holloway also liked to draw. "He was a wonderful son," said his mother, Shirley. "He had lots of friends, he was a really good person all the way around." He is survived by his wife. Shirley Holloway said her son was deeply affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and became the third member of his family to join the Marines, after his father and brother. She last spoke with Matthew the night before he was killed. "He would always say, 'Don't worry, I'm fine,'" his mother said.

Not sure what to say?

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this holiday season and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Matthew W. Holloway US Marine Lance Corporal.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that...

I was a team leader on the QRF that Matt was on. I remember January 13, 2005 like it was just yesterday. It's Memorial Day 2017 and I just can't stop thinking of Matt and Juan. Both were great Marines and I miss them both. Semper Fi Brothers!

one of my favorite photos of Matt..

Thank you for your service and sacrifice. We have not forgotten.

It has truly been my honor to sign Matthew's guest book these past few years. Unfortunately, due to complications from my Multiple Sclerosis, this may be the last message I'm able to write. Please forgive me and know that Matthew will always be remembered in my home.

Miss you so Matt. We will never forget you, Terry, Gary and Joshua Verstuyft

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Lcpl Holloway and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of freedom and liberty. Sadly, America has lost one of its finest heroes, the U.S. has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage, which they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Lcpl. Holloway has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.
