Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Young, Matthew C., passed away suddenly on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the age of 38. Matthew was born on August 28, 1987, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Beloved father of Abram and Sloane Young; son of Edward and Jean Young; brother of Benjamin (Elizabeth) Young, James (Cassandra) Young, Leah (Jon) Japuntich, and Rachel (Nicholas) Young; Grandson of the late James and Carlotta Dalton and Joseph and Mary Young; uncle of the late Allison Bates; nephew, cousin, and friend to many.

Matthew had a larger than life presence and a gift for storytelling. He loved making people laugh and could always get a room’s attention with a good story or a clever remark. Endlessly curious and full of knowledge, he seemed to know a little about a lot, from sports and history to politics and current events. A self proclaimed “master of all trades,” Matthew was the person everyone wanted on their trivia team and could always be counted on for an interesting story, a surprising fact, or a perfectly timed joke.

Above all else, Matthew was a proud and devoted father. His children, Abram and Sloane, and their mother Lindsay were the loves of his life. Becoming a father changed his life and became his greatest joy. Whether it was taking adventurous golf cart rides, playing board games, or cheering together for their favorite teams, Matthew treasured every moment with his children. They were his pride, his purpose, and his greatest legacy.

Matthew was raised in Ballwin, Missouri, alongside his four siblings. He and his brother Jimmy were especially inseparable, often known as the “Dynamic Duo,” “Ren and Stimpy,” and later “Dumb and Dumber.” The siblings grew up in a lively household filled with laughter, mischief, and love, forming a bond that stayed strong throughout their lives. To family and friends alike, Matthew was more than a relative. He was a loyal friend, a brother figure, and someone who always showed up for life’s everyday moments and biggest milestones.

Matthew grew up playing hockey and was one of the St. Louis Blues’ biggest fans. He attended countless games with family and friends and supported the team his entire life. Watching the Blues win Game Seven of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final with his son Abram was one of his happiest memories. He loved passing that passion on to his children, teaching Abram and Sloane how to skate and enjoy the game.
Matthew was a journeyman sprinkler fitter, and proud member of St. Louis Sprinkler Fitter Local 268. He took great pride in his work and formed strong friendships along the way.

Throughout his life, Matthew faced challenges with courage and determination, always striving to move forward and be the best father, son, brother, and friend he could be. Those who knew him best remember his resilience, his kindness, and the deep love he had for his family.
Matthew will be remembered for his humor, his generous heart, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. His spirit lives on most clearly in Abram and Sloane, who carry forward his thoughtfulness, his humor, his love of hockey, and his joy for life.

Matthew brought so much joy into our lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Though his time with us was far too short, his laughter, his stories, and his love will live on in the hearts and memories of his family and friends.
