Ms Mattie blessed our family with her kindness and love towards our sister Monica McHugh. Monica was a resident at Clausen House for many years. Ms. Mattie was understanding of all the residents' needs and care. She treated every resident and their families with the deepest respect. We shared many visits and phone calls while Ms Mattie was in Oakland and reunited when she and Reverend James moved to her Alabama home. Mattie family and mine grew up in the same neighborhood. We also attended the same church, Mt. Carmel. Last year in June I went home for a visit and Mattie was insistent and seeing me. I finally got to see her before I left. This year I went home for a class reunion and my intention was to see her again, but the day before I arrived, I was told she passed the night before.
