Maureen DeMilia Novenber 23, 1942 - September 12, 2013 Groton - Sister Maureen DeMilia, SSC, formerly of Nicholas Ave., Groton, passed away on Thursday morning, September 12, 2013, at Apple Rehabilitation Center of Mystic. She was born in Union City, N.J., on Novenber 23, 1942, the daughter of the late Peter and Gertrude (Shad) DeMilia. Sister Maureen was a 1960 graduate of St. Bernard High School, New London and a graduate of Nortre Dame College in New Hampshire. She received a master's degree in education from Pittsfield State College, Pittsfield, Mass., and a six year certification in administration from Southern Connecticut State University. She was a school teacher for 50 years in parochial schools throughout New England. Most recently, she taught middle school at Plainfield Catholic School until its closing in 2009. In 2010, Sister Maureen celebrated her Golden Jubilee marking 50 years as a Consecrated Religious, first as a Sister of Holy Cross and later as a member of the Society of Sisters for the church. She took a very active role in ministry at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish in Groton. Sister Maureen was on the Liturgy Committee and facilitated a Small Faith Community. She loved her roles as Altar Server, Minister of Communion, and Lector. She is survived by her sisters, Carol Brousseau of Chelmsford, Mass., Susan Tomaja of Jefferson City, Mo., and Mary Shuman of West Hartford; as well as by her brothers, Carl DeMilia of Southbury, and Peter Adams, formerly of Groton. Several nieces and nephews and a grand-nephew remain. Sister Maureen is also survived by her dear friends, Paula and Joseph Zeppieri and family of Groton. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, October 5, at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. Interment will be private. There are no visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be sent to St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton, CT 06340 or to Apple Rehabilitation Center (Recreation Department), 28 Broadway, Mystic, CT 06355. Byles-Groton Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements. Sister Maureen's family and friends are very grateful to Apple Rehabilitation Center in Mystic for the wonderful care and concern given her during the past year.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Sr. Maureen. She was my teacher at Plainfield Catholic and was one of my favorite teachers. I learned so much from her and she was amazing woman. My thoughts are with her friends and family. May she rest in peace.

My husband and I were very sad to hear of Sister Maureen's passing. I hadn't seen her since my parents passed away, but she was a big part of my childhood and family. She was a great lady with a huge heart. Her family and friends are in our prayers....
