MAURICE GOLDBERG Obituary

GOLDBERG--Maurice, 80, died peacefully at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, FL after a year-long battle with cancer, on January 13, 2013. He is survived by his adoring wife, Joyce Roe Goldberg; his loving and beloved children, Gari Goldberg Bloom, Jeff Goldberg, and Marc Goldberg, and their respective spouses, Charles Bloom, Faith Mershon Goldberg, Lynn Frazier Goldberg, as well as his seven delicious grandchildren, Ali and Mack Bloom, Abby, Ben, and Sara Goldberg, and Emma and Elisabeth Goldberg. Born in Brooklyn, NY on April 7, 1932 to Julius and Gertrude Goldberg, he grew up in the Seagate community, beside the Atlantic Ocean. Always an excellent student, Maurice's name is one of the top three listed on the Honor Roll which is displayed in the halls of Lincoln High School, Brooklyn, NY. Maurice went on to complete his college education in three years, moving on with honors and having been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, he remained at the University of Pennsylvania attending their prestigious School of Dental Medicine from 1952-1956. After serving from 1956-1958 in the U.S. Naval Reserve Dental Corps Active Duty on Treasure Island, San Francisco Maurice returned to the University of Pennsylvania where he completed his Periodontal Studies and was a National Institute of Dental Research Fellow and Grantee. Among his accomplishments, he rose from Instructor to Clinical Professor at the New York University College of Dentistry retiring after forty years of service, was an Attending in Periodontics at New York Methodist Hospital, Long Island College Hospital and Maimondies Medical Center, all in Brooklyn, NY, a Consultant at the VA Medical Center in New York City, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontics, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Second District Dental Society of New York, a Member of the Council of Education of the Dental Society of the State of New York, a Member and Past President of the Northeastern Society of Peridontics, a Life Member of the American Academy of Periodontology, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the New York State Society of Peridontics. In 1960 Maurice joined a well established periodontal practice in downtown Brooklyn, NY. As the practice grew and developed a reputation for excellence Murray was joined by two skilled and talented younger men, Dr. Alan Mintz and five years later, Dr. Larry Dober. Together they built a practice which is held in high esteem by their patients and their colleagues in the field of Periodontology. Drs Goldberg, Mintz and Dober practiced together for about thirty years. Their relationship and friendship remained constant well after Maurice retired five plus years ago. Maurice and Joyce were happily married for 54 years this past December. They and their children enjoyed many wonderful trips and adventures together including a road trip cross country through the national parks, a four week family tour of Europe with few reservations, consecutive summers in Gigaro, France. Grammy and Gramps enjoyed time together with their children and grandchildren in Newport, RI, Breckenridge, CO and Port St Lucie, FL. We all will treasure those memories for our lifetimes. Maurice will always be remembered as a highly respected periodontist, skilled, smart and kind to his many longtime and devoted patients. His students will remember him for his patience, his gentleness, his ability to communicate to them those things that were necessary to treat and heal their patients. To his family he was "the bestest." He will always be remembered and always be missed. His brother-in-law Dan sent his family this quote, "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." Funeral services Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 11:15am at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street at Amsterdam Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Sinai Medical Center., Attn: Dr. Michael Schwartz, 4306 Alton Rd., 3rd Floor, Miami Beach, FL 33141.

So glad to have known Maurice. His son Marc married into our family and he immulates the same qualities of his Dad; great skill, kindness and compassion. Marc's treatment of his patients is a true testament to the example set for him by his dad.
