Max and I first met in 1950, we were classmates and played freshman football at Columbia. He was the quarterback, and I was a second-string, maybe less offensive lineman. Later on in 1957 by sheer accident when we were both in the United States Marine Corps, he was a Company Commander and I was a Platoon Commander in the same company at Camp Pendleton, California.
