Read MoreMax and I met in Finland during happy hour - guess it runs in the family. Max was a good man. He loved Anne and togeter they brought Natalie and Daniel into our family. He soothed fussy babies and grumpy mothers-in-law. His gin and tonics were the best. Max was loved and will be missed. Cheers, dear friend.

Max was my first boss at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow in 1987. He was kind, considerate, professional, caring and supportive. Thanks to him I learned very early in my career how a good supervisor and terrific leader behaved. His guidance helped me on countless occasions. Max was simply the best and I will miss him.

Max and I were good friends in the early years but grew apart after he joined the Department of State. He was a remarkable individual who could do just about anything he wanted to do from heavy labor to skilled craftsmanship. He also was an intellectual of considerable merit. We worked together, played together and studied together. We cut down many Fir trees for fire wood. Max was so sharp and so fit that he seemed like he'd live forever. He was a good man.

Max will always be a part of the Homeplace team! He did nothing but bring smiles and laughter to the staff here, in the end he brought thousands of tears with the impact of his passing. We thank you Max for making us smile and showing us bravery. We thank Anne and the kids for sharing such a great man.
