Maxine Herring Parker
November 12, 2013
In November 2005, Maxine Herring Parker was elected to serve as the Birmingham City Council representative for District 4. During the election, Councilwoman Parker's platform focused on bettering the quality of life for citizens in her District. In August 2013, she was re-elected to a third term, and by a unanimous vote, her colleagues selected her President of the 2013-2017 City Council. Throughout her tenure on the Council, she promoted economic and community development as well as championed environmental issues, which led to passage of a Vehicular/Pedestrian Bridge on F.L. Shuttlesworth Drive and Environmental Protection Agency investigations into hazards plaguing District 4 residents.
Parker retired as a 41 year employee of Talladega College, Alabama's oldest historically Black College; it was founded in 1867. She served as the Executive Assistant for the President and was delighted to have served for 27 years as Secretary to the Talladega College Board of Trustees. Her 41 year tenure at Talladega afforded her the opportunity to serve under the administration of six Presidents and six Board of Trustee Chairpersons.
She was a lifelong member of Oak Street Baptist Church where she actively engaged in all facets of the church. She served as the Clerk-Secretary, was a member of the Flora Herring Mission and Women's Sunday School Bible Class. Her life's goal was epitomized by the words, "If I can help somebody as I pass along, then my living shall not be in vain."
Councilor Maxine Herring Parker transitioned from this life on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.
A Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 18, 2013 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Oak Street Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at Boutwell Auditorium with burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
