Melachrino Michael Violet Newport, RI - Melachrino Michael Violet, 86, of 45 Berkeley Ave, Newport, RI, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of Marguerite (Papadoulias) Violet. Born in Newport, RI on April 2, 1922, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Margaret (Melachrino) Violet. Mr. Violet worked as a lobsterman for over 50 years, before retiring in 1985. He was a longstanding member of the St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church where he formerly served on the Church Board. He was also a former member of the Redmen and the Order of AHEPA. He was a Veteran of the US Navy during WWII, serving on a submarine tender "Anthedon" in the Pacific Theater. He enjoyed being an all-around handyman. Early in his career working on the lobster boats of Newport, he rescued a fellow lobsterman who's boat had sunk. Six years later he married that man's daughter Marguerite. He is survived by wife Marguerite of 56 years, and four sons Michael M. Violet and his wife Sue of Middletown, Ernest M Violet DMD and his wife Leah of Jamestown, RI, Harry M. Violet and his wife Cathy of Middletown, and Johnny M. Violet and his wife Jean of Tiverton, and a daughter Angela Kempenaar of Middletown, and nine grandchildren, Chuckie Kempenaar, Jr. and Mike Kempenaar, Jessica, Stephen, and Taylor Violet, Michael A. Violet, Jr., and Ernie, Alexis and Gregory Violet, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers John M., James M., and Nicholas M Violet, and a sister Koula Racheotes, and a son in law Charles E. Kempenaar. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 11, at 10:00am from the Hambly Funeral Home, "Brick House" 30 Red Cross Avenue, Newport, with a Funeral Service at 11:00am in St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church, 390 Thames Street, Newport. Burial will be in Middletown Cemetery in Middletown. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, March 10 from 5:00-8:00pm in the Hambly Funeral Home.
