Melvin Kirkland

Mel & I worked many hours together, many of them under very stressful conditions. I knew him as a very giving and dedicated man. You could count on Mel to add a lot of fun to what ever we were up to. I served with Mel in the Optical Shop aboard the USS Emory S. Land AS-39.

Mel was always there to show me the ropes and help me succeed. When most people wouldn't stoop to assist a sailor who was so "wet behind the ears", Mel was always there.

Though I haven't seen Mel in yearrs, the positive impacts he had on my life are still being felt. Thank you Mel.

May you rest in the arms of our Lord.

I did have the pleasure of friendship with Mel. He always put forth 100 percent towards his role in life and in the Navy. As one of the last great Opticalmen to serve he will be surely missed.

On behalf of the entire NSWCCD Philadelphia Command, I share our sincere condolences to his friends and family. Rest in peace Mel, It has been well desired and God bless your soul.

Thanks Mel, just in case I didn't say it as many times as I should've. Sometimes Mel's intrusive helpfulness was annoying, but it was ALWAYS meant with the best of intentions. Whenever I showed up on the Isle of Guam, I could count on Mel to meet me there and help me out with whatever I needed. Mel certainly knew sacrificial giving and practiced it.
