Read MoreMel was my Sergeant during my tenure in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1968 to 1973. Despite his need to present a tough exterior, he really had a heart of gold. I drove him crazy with many of my shenanigans, and when he found it necessary to admonish me for my actions and behaviors, he always did with a wink and trace of a smile. Mel was a good man, a friend, and I was proud to serve with him.
