Melvin Neil Woinsky, PhD, 75, passed away on June 9, 2014 in his home in Long Branch. Mel was born and raised in the Bronx, NY and lived in Englishtown, Randolph, and Holmdel, New Jersey before he retired to Long Branch with his wife Lilly. Mel graduated Magna Cum Laude from The City College of New York with a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering. He received his Masters and Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from New York University. He had a long career working for Bell Labs, AT&T and later, Northern Telecom. Mel was a widely published and respected Engineer who traveled the world to promote international standards in wireless networks. He was the 1998 recipient of the American National Standards Institute's Finnegan Standards Medal for extraordinary leadership in the development and application of voluntary standards in the telecommunications industry. Mel's passion was boating and fishing (before his activities became impaired by Parkinson's Disease). Over the years, he owned two twin-engine power boats and spent nearly every summer weekend on the water with his family, cruising the Navesink River, around Sandy Hook and into the Atlantic Ocean. He frequently took his family into New York harbor to enjoy the views of New York City and returned to shore to end the weekend with a fine seafood meal.

Mel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and brother and will be greatly missed by all.

Mel is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lilly Woinsky, children Julie and her husband Charles Hanson and their daughter Chloe Hanson, and Orin and his wife Dawn Cody, and his brother Sam and his wife Harriet.
