SAN ANTONIO, Texas
Micaela Dominguez Gonzales, died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Sept. 1, 2020. Micaela would have been 103 years young on September 30th and was the Matriarch of Six Generations.
Micaela, affectionately known as “Callie” was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1917. She was the 8th child of 15 children born to Maria De Jesus Arias and Melecio Dominguez.
Micaela married Estanislado Gonzales on June 1, 1935 and together had 8 children. On June 1, 1985, the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary surrounded by their children. Sadly, on April 18, 1989 Estanislado passed to his heavenly resting place after 54 years of marriage.
She was a loving wife, mother and sister. Her children remember their mother very lovingly and admired her strength. She was a great cook, who often grew her own fruits and vegetables, baking pies and making clothes for her children. They will always remember the smell of fresh tamales and her good cooking.
Micaela taught her children the importance of faith and service. She was involved as a room mother during her children’s years at Sarah King Elementary and remained a room mother even after her own children grew up. She was also dedicated to St. Timothy Catholic Church. In 2019, she was celebrated and was awarded the “Pioneer Award” for her dedicated service and leadership to St. Timothy.
She was a life-long resident of San Antonio. Since 1951, she lived in the house that her husband built. She was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church since its inception in 1953. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and a member of the Guadalupano Society for 87 years.
Family was her main priority especially her close-knit family of 5 brothers and 9 sisters. She is survived by a sister Frances Rosales. Brothers and sisters include: Melecio Dominguez Jr., Pedro Dominguez, Fina Flores, Lala Rodriguez, Magdalena Garza, Alberto Dominguez, Bessie Ledbetter, Nina Dominguez, Isaac Dominguez, Beatrice Arias, Connie Tristan, Joe Dominguez and Maria Luisa Solloa.
She often shared fond memories of her childhood in San Antonio and Houston- La Porte. Her memories often served as a link between the newly immigrated (early 1900) family members and the following generations.
She was preceded in death by her son Nicolas, sons in law, Alfonso De La Rosa and Steve Ramon; one granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Carrillo and great-grandson Moses Lujan. She is survived by seven children, Carmen De La Rosa, Ana Ramon, Alicia Alvarado (Ventura); Joe L. Gonzales (Gloria); Edward Gonzales (Elma); Jesse Gonzales (Martha); Gabriel Gonzales (Patty). Nicolas was survived by his wife, Helen.
She had 20 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren, 35 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great grandchild. Grandchildren: Loretta De La Rosa, Valerie De La Rosa, Carlos Gonzales, Andres Gonzales, Leticia Gonzales, Annette Vanderlinden, Diana Rodriguez, Arturo Ruiz, Patty Lockwood, Armando Ruiz, Alan Ruiz, Sandra Mauricio, Ricardo Alvarado, Elisa Gonzales, Laura Gonzales, Edward Allen Gonzales, Jerry Gonzales, Naomi Gonzales and Sarah Gonzales-Nguyen.
Aunt Callie or Tia Callie had numerous nephews and nieces. She lovingly remembered each of her nephews and nieces by name and shared many memories with them.
A special thank you is extended to her caretaker, Ms. Maria Rodriguez for her faithful service to Ms. Gonzales. We would like to thank the staff of the St. Gabriel’s Hospice, especially Maria Galvan, Martha Gutierrez and RN Janette.
The family would like to acknowledge the dedicated and unwavering love and care her daughters Ana Ramon, Carmen De La Rosa, Alicia Alvarado and grandson Armando Ruiz provided to “Mom”. Their constant care made the last years of her life comfortable and fulfilled.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 7, 1 pm to 4 pm at Angelus Funeral Home and is open to extended family and friends, adhering to all COVID inclusions. A private Mass will be held at St. Timothy Catholic Church. Interment will also be held privately at San Fernando Cemetery #2.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to send a donation to her beloved St. Timothy Catholic Church, 1515 Saltillo, San Antonio, Texas 78207, in care of Mrs. Micaela Gonzales.
