Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home - Galax Obituary

Michael “Mack” McMillan Sr. died peacefully at home on February 21, 2022 in Galax, VA at the age of 82.

Mike is survived by his wife Ann, his sons Mike Jr., Greg and Scott, his granddaughters Kristin and Kathryn and great granddaughters Sophie and Charlotte. He is also survived by his brothers Charles “Skip” Dickerson and Troy “Corky” McMillan; sisters Dawn Daly and Jackie Dalton.

Mike was born in January of 1940 in Galax to Troy and Blanche McMillan. He graduated from Galax High School in 1958 and attended Wake Forest University on a football scholarship. Mike then married Ann, his high school sweetheart on July 25th, 1959.

After moving to Winston-Salem, NC, Mike left the trucking industry to start a new company with his father Troy. Together they built a chain of 26 convenience stores. Mike was also a talented salesman and worked with various firms, eventually retiring from Atlantic Bay Mortgage Company.

Mike and Ann moved back to Galax where he was a member of the Masons and was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Galax and served in many leadership positions. One of his fondest memories was donning a red suit and a white beard to pass out presents for the Elks Annual Christmas Toy Drive every year. Even his granddaughters could not tell it was him.

Mike led a full life and loved to spend time with his cousins attending bluegrass music events. Their old gray school bus was a fixture at Felts Park every August. It even made the front page of the newspaper when the engine caught fire while waiting to get into the park.

A memorial service is scheduled for March 5th, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Galax at 1:00 pm. The ceremony will be officiated by Pastor Kevin Rosenfelt and T. L. Turman of Athens, GA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mike’s life. Condolences may be sent to [email protected]. The family would like to thank Dr. Art Pemberton and the Twin County Hospice nurses and staff for their loving care.

Not sure what to say?

Thoughts and prayers for your family during this sad time . Mike was a good friend and I will always remember him.

Cluster of 50 Trees

I am so sorry for your loss. Mike was a great guy & will be sadly missed.

Ann and family, I am so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Guess he and Charlie are enjoying a heavenly Elks Lodge. May you find comfort and peace in the wonderful memories you shared.

Nancy & I particularly enjoyed the times we've spent with Mike & Ann starting in May 2003 - when they hosted a memorial service luncheon at their home for my Mother, Juanita Sue McMillan DeHart (i.e., Mike was my 'oldest' first cousin, with him being 10 yrs. older than me). Over the next 20 years, we biked the Virgina Creeper numerous times, met for lunches / dinners in Galax or Blowing Rock, and attended the Barter Theatre together. We shared our love of Christ, family and country in all...

We want to give our best wishes to the family. Our prayers are with you all.

Loving prayers from our family. It was a great honor to be able to provide medical care to Mike. May God's supreme peace and love be upon Ann and the family.

Sorry to hear of Mike's passing, Condolences to his family.
