I am sorry for your loss. Mr. Barbee was my teacher at Alexander Valley for 5th and 6th grade. He may have been a health nut (but in a good way) but he was also very caring and really wanted us to learn. He will be missed.

Mike was so kind to me when I was a shy and frightened new arrival to junior high school. I will always remember him for his warm smile and gentle manner. I want his family to know how much he helped me through a hard time and how my heart goes out to all of you in your hardest time of all.

It seems as though Peggy's message sums up Mike's time on this earth. I can only add that it was my pleasure to know him in high school and then be able to reconnect with him again after college. He had grown into a truly gentle soul and had such a peaceful presence. A rare gift to have known him.

It would seem that some come to this world to bring kindness and light, giving so much to others...being an inspiration to so many. And yet, they can only stay just so long, much like many of the creatures that have left this planet, for it is still far too harsh here. (My brother was of a nature like Mike's).
However, the harshness has begun to die, and we are witnessing its throws of death. Then others like Mike will lead, and to the way I see that "life" works, he will be back...

Mike is someone who touched each of us in some positive way when we were in high school. Our paths crossed a few times in adulthood since we both chose to resettle in the northern part of the state and I know that he continued to leave his positive energy with those he touched in his adult life as well. I know his passing marks the loss of a kind and gentle soul who made a difference in our world that will survive beyond his years.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I knew Mike from our childhood in La Crescenta. We went to the same schools and were in lots of the same classes. I also remember him as intelligent and Zen-like.
