Michael V. Behul, entered eternal life from his home in Scotch Plains, New Jersey on the evening of December 16, 2018. In 1927, Michael was born in Newark, New Jersey to his loving parents, Anna and Michael S. Behul, both of whom have predeceased him. Michael graduated from East Side High School in Newark, New Jersey and played minor league baseball as a catcher with the Dodgers organization before serving in the United States Navy during the Second World War. Michael primarily was stationed on Guam before being honorably discharged in 1947.
He attended Seton Hall University for three years while employed with the General Electric Corporation. Michael served in various positions with the General Electric Corporation at its Boyd Street, Newark facility for over thirty six years before retiring in 1984. For many of those years with General Electric, he was its transportation supervisor, responsible for a significant fleet of local and long haul trucks as well as tractor trailers. In 1952, Michael married the love of his life, Arlene R. Ritt who predeceased him in 2016. They moved to Scotch Plains from Newark in 1962 and lived in the same home for fifty-six years. Michael’s devotion to Arlene and his family were paramount all his life. He was a humble and good man who was respected and admired by all those he encountered. For almost twenty-five years, Michael was an umpire with the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Little League and it was well known by those in the league that if he was the umpire designated to call balls and strikes behind the plate, the game to be played was a big one. Michael was also a Sir Knight, Knights of Columbus’ 4th degree Watchung Assembly 0672 and Father John Nelligan Council, 5730. He has been a communicant of Saint Bartholomew Church since 1962.
Michael is survived by his loving daughters, Kathleen Yessman (Timothy M.) and Jane Dube. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, great-grandson and niece Betty Heuer, nephew Dr. Martin Estok. Michael’s three granddaughters, Heather A. Dube, Colleen A. Stano and Mary Kate Yessman were particularly attentive and caring to him in the last few years due to the infirmities of age. Michael was predeceased by his beloved son, Michael J. Behul, several years ago and a wonderful sister, Marion Estok. The family is very grateful to each one of the Visiting Angels of Scotch Plains for their exceptional care of Michael during the last four years.
