Everything Was in Place
At 38, Michael Berkeley was soaring: following in the footsteps of his cousin, John Utendahl, one of the country's most successful African- American financiers, Mr. Berkeley recently founded his own brokerage firm, with 79th-floor offices in the north tower of the World Trade Center. He had a house in the Hamptons, two young sons, and had been married for more than 10 years to Lourdes Perez-Berkeley, a top portfolio analyst who is also a former Miss Puerto Rico.

But Mr. Berkeley, the son of a homicide detective and a head nurse, "was a regular guy, the greatest," said a cousin, Ronald Culberson, who described Mr. Berkeley as upbeat, warmly generous, welcoming. Another cousin, Ellen Turner, said that Mr. Berkeley and his wife, "never lost sight of themselves."

Husband and wife referred to each with a deference and respect that only seemed to increase during their marriage, Ms. Turner said. "There was a giddiness about them - they always joked and smiled around each other. They protected each other. He didn't create her and she didn't create him. They complemented each other."

Remembering Michael on the 20th anniversary of 9/11...

Dear Lourdes and sons,
My name is Denise. My family and the Berkeleys were friends in New Rochelle for many years . I used to babysit for Mark and Michael. Im sure you dont remember but I met you briefly at Audrey and Reds house many years ago. My husband and I attended Michaels memorial service. I still think of him almost every day. He was the first baby I took care of and I loved babysitting for him. He was always such a sweet child. I watched him grow up to be such a fine young...

It is evident from the many memories shared on this page that you were a well-loved man. It is a horrible shame that the world lost such a loving, kind and brilliant man like you on that horrible day. I pray today for your wife, your sons and the many friends and family that are still missing you greatly.

Peace and love it was so nice to see you Lourdes and the 2 boys tonight. Thank you for stopping by the building where you and Mike lived on that day. I was so happy to express to the boys my experiences I had with there father who was at Library court condominiums. Your doorman (big game James).

My prayers to your family Mike - with love from your classmate.

Michael J. Berkeley was an amazing father.

Lourdes,

We've never met but I used to sit next to Mike when he and I worked at Utendahl together.

Mike was the kind of guy I hope my nephews grow up to be and my nieces marry (I don't have any children). I remember Mike for his rapier wit, his amazing capacity to process information and his uncanny ability to read people. He was an excellent judge of character.

I learned a lot about how to deal with clients from Mike "through osmosis", which is the way we all learn...

Lourdes,

I haven't seen you in ages, but I always think about you and Mike. I will never forget the round we played together up at Yale and all the times we went on business trips together.

Hope to see you soon! God Bless!

I walked a mile for you (mile #176) on 2/13/13 as a dedication to your life.
