Not sure what to say?

I still remember our friendship at Georgetown with great fondness. The list of his many and varied accomplishments does not surprise me at all. He excelled in so many areas and brought his own special blend of insightful compassion and keen analysis to them all. We took Paul Hume´s opera course together, played chess in the Chess Club (where I first met him), and shared our love of English literature. The Church was important to both of us. I can picture him as a Knight of Malta! I´m glad he...

Still think of him often. Still find myself saying little things he used to say like "That´s the spirit!" when encouraging someone (which he did all the time) or "Chornya Beda!" when startled. Still feel a pang every time I hear one if the operas we studied together or see photos of Constitution Hall where we had seasons tickets to the National Symphony concerts. And of course if I dare play a game of chess (at which I am still terrible!), I remember our days at the Georgetoen Chess Club,...

Dr. Deren was a great physician. We miss him tremendously.

Just found out the sad news. Mike was one of the first people I met when I was a terrified freshman at Georgetown, and he welcomed me into the Chess Club. He reawakened my interest in science and ironically convinced me to switch from linguistics to pre-med, which in those days meant I had to leave Georgetown (which did not let women into the College of Arts and Sciences) and go to GWU, so we lost contact. Mikes love for literature and music gave the lie to the idea that scientists had to be...

I was on vacation earlier this summer & just recently read this obituary: I send my most heart-felt condolences for your loss. My experience with Dr. Deren, and I am MOST surprised to read referrals to him as 'Mickey' because he exuded a medical persona that deserved a little more formality; was as a CCU RN at Backus, assisting with bedside chest tube insertion: prior to the procedure, he was in a music state of mind, fortunately for me, in high school (MANY years before) I had passed a...

Dr Deren was a great diagnostician, and a nice man. I am so sorry for your loss.

So sorry to read about Dr. Deren's passing. He was a great doctor and teacher, and a all around nice guy. He will be missed.

Mrs. Deren & family: When my father passed, many years ago, a friend sent the following words to me. I keep them posted by my desk. I hope that you can take the same peace and comfort from them that I do.
Dr. Deren(Doctor Bulldozer, as I lovingly called him)was a charmer and a man who knew his business. When I went to the Wound Care Clinic, I actually looked forward to his care. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and smile on his face. He will be sorely missed
