Heartfelt condolences to the entire Herlihey family. Wish I could have shared more time with you all. I tried to stop by a few times to the Albany address, hoping to reconnect after young Mike's passing. Still remember all the great times with Mike – around town, wrestling together at Brother Rice, on Mike's motorcycle, and at Paddock Lake, where he taught me water ski. But what I remember most fondly was the evidences of a warm, caring family, and the work of Dr. Herlihey, as a pillar of the community. What a great example to all of us.

Herlihey Family, I offer my profound sympathy as this world has lost a great, compassionate man. His legacy however continues in the hearts of all those he touched. Doc was a very respectable and honorable man as well as a mentor and father figure. I consider myself very fortunate to have worked for him all during my formative high school and college years. I witnessed his generosity to clients who were experiencing financial difficulty, his compassion to clients who lost their family pet, his encouragement of his employees, his comfort to animals, his desire to continue to expand his knowledge and his love for his family. He led by example and set high standards which strengthened my work ethic and led me to a successful career in the animal field. I have also treasured the Christmas parties at your house, the summer parties at Paddock Lake, the joke telling times and even the banjo playing days. Doc will be sorely missed but he will always live on in our hearts and memories.

Dr. Herlihey was the reason at age 10 that I wished to become a Veterinarian. He allowed me to work as a veterinary assistant between my junior and senior years at the University of Illinois Veterinary College. Then he gave me my first job as and associate. He was my mentor and was always there to support me in all my endeavors. He guided with support and trust. Gayle and I were fortunate to attend yearly Christmas with Mike and Yvonne for decades.

Dear Yvonne and family, Doc always knew how special he was to me. Just as he was to put an add in the journal I called him to ask if any positiins were open. It was meant to be I was so lucky to have such a wonderful mentor and friend. He came to me when I most needed a mentor, father, collegue and friend. We had such wonderful times working together and I was made to feel like part of the family. He always loved what he did and knew how to enjoy life. He adored his wife Yvonne, a most beautiful couple and laughed much with his many friends. A great story teller and barbershopper and banjo player to boot. I will miss this man that gave me so much. You are all in my prayers ,

December 30, 2013

Dearest Yvonne and Family, most sincerest condolences and prayers...I am saddened to hear of the loss of such a great man that I will always consider my adopted grandfather/father and mentor. From taking me in as my first job at Hilltop where I started off as just a kennel worker, to where I learned and grew to become a technician learning from both Dr. Herlihey and Mike, to becoming friends with Mike, to then finishing after completion of Vet school learning in the end to be a veterinarian. Blessed to always consider Doc as my mentor, and family. A more compassionate, loving and wise man I have not known, and if in life I can become at least half the man I knew him to be...than well I can feel privileged. From the animals he cared for to the people whose lives he touched, and the family he created, He will be forever a blessing to this world...

Dearest Yvonne and family, We were all saddened to hear of your precious husband and father's passing. He was a very special man to our family, especially Gordon. Gordon loved and cherished him as not only an employer but a mentor and adopted grandfather. He looked up to him and respected everything he taught him and showed him. He wouldn't be a Vet today if it wasn't for Doc and his influence and encouragement. He lovingly took care of all our dogs as well as our daughters dog too. Never has there been such a loving, generous and caring man. We pray that God will give you comfort and encouragement now as you have to say good bye for now. We know he is reunited with his children who have gone before him and that Jesus is holding him now in his arms too. Thank you for all the years you shared that wonderful man. He will be greatly missed by us all. All our love and prayers, John and Kathy Smok and all our family!

Dearest Yvonne and family, we're all so sorry to hear of the passing of your precious husband and father! He was not only a wonderful Dr. to all of our pets, but a wonderful employer, mentor and adopted grandfather to our son Gordon! He wouldn't be a VET today if it wasn't for all the encouragement Doc always was to him. From the moment he began working at the hospital in Evergreen Park to today, he has always had such great love for Dr. Herlihey, he admired his generosity and honesty and has been guided by that example. We cherished his smile and thoughtfulness. He was always so generous to us when he cared for our dog and would always give us "Gordon's discount" even when we protested! He'd just smile... We pray for God to comfort and fill you with his strength as you say good bye for now, for he's at peace and joined with his precious children who have gone before him and safe at home with Jesus. All our love and prayers John and Kathy Smok and family

I was privileged to be a teacher at Evergreen Park High School when Dr. Herlihey was on the school board. He personified kindness and caring for students and teachers alike. My young son had a white rat with a tumor and Dr. Herlihey operated on it - pro bono. He was an outstanding man and a great credit to his family, his profession and the village.

To the Herlihey Family,
I was so sorry to read about Mike's passing. He has taken care of our dogs since 1964. I will forever remember his kindness. He used to bring the five of us kids into the exam room so we could see what he was doing to our dog. A more special person you could not ask for. He helped us through the loss of three dogs. What a wonderful man. He will be sorely missed. God bless you all.
